OUR ENVIRONMENT, OCEANS, RIVERS AND BEACHES

We must conserve and share our seas and beaches with our feathered friends and our friends in the sea. We have got to rethink our relationship with nature. We have got to reconnect to nature.

We are sure that lots of you are trying to connect with nature, by the very fact that you go down to the beach, take country walks, or get on your boats for a river or sea journey. You are probably just wanting to get away from town or city life, just to feel normal again. I think what your body is trying to say is “lets get back to nature, lets normalise”! But one thing some people tragically do is conveniently forget to take back with them their rubbish, they even forget to put their rubbish in a waste bin even if it’s available. By leaving their rubbish around, they are going against nature and becoming planet polluting people.

In the world today, there is approximately 150 billion tons of plastic waste debris lying and floating around, are you shocked, you should be! Approximately 75 billion tons of this deadly to nature plastic waste, ends up in the sea and then onto our beaches. Such things as tooth brushes, combs, lighter cases, fishing tackle, bowls, buckets, plastic cups and toys and polythene bags by the million. Lager and fizzy drinks cans, ring tops, old crates and the dumping of toxic industrial waste such as polychlorinated biphenyl's is also unscrupulous and an horrific hazard, both to wildlife, birds and to humans and it is slowly killing mother earth, nature and the human race. Such things also as heavy metals:- mercury and methyl mercury, uranium, arsenic and lead etc, are all being dumped into our seas and when you come to think about it, “its scandalous”. So the next time you leave your rubbish pollution about, or throw something over board, just think “why am I doing this”! Its against nature. By doing your good deed, you have helped the Eco System and Nature and do not forget! You are very much part of nature, take away mobile phones, computers, electricity, concrete buildings and of course
the car and your back to Nature!

 Beach Rubbish
Pollution in the sea is extremely serious, in particular polythene bags. Polythene bags, toothbrushes, combs etc can all be swallowed by whales, dolphins, seals, fish and particularly larger fish and birds. Polythene bags are a menace and can get entangled around the fins and mouths of wildlife, in particular the mouths of dolphins, as their lip type features protrude. Sadly many of our wildlife friends choke agonisingly to death or drown because of the deadly polythene bags and large pieces of discarded polythene sheets and often very sharp (because of the pounding seas), plastic debris.

You will understand about the problems of polythene sheets and bags and ropes if you own a boat that has a propeller. A night mare!

Anti-fouling. If you own a boat use anti-fouling that doesn’t contain Tributlytin (TBT) as this is extremely toxic to our, under your boat, sea friends.

Rivers come in land from the sea, they are tidal, so it’s important that rivers contain no pollution, rubbish or toxic waste as the rivers will bring it inland. It is also important that inland rivers contain no pollution or toxic waste put into the river by industry as it will eventually end up in the sea.

So alarm bells are ringing. Everyone has the responsibility to help, Reduce, Recycle and Reuse, it’s the magic words. We have to stop dumping pollution in our seas, its common sense that it will get washed ashore and then seriously pollute our beaches. What a sad shame that birds, wildlife and mammals (whales, dolphins and seals etc) are having to die and often in agony to show us what is really happening in our oceans. It’s us humans that have done all of this to them. Lets all now live happily ever after knowing that we have at least done our bit! Lets all share and care.

If you see any pollution or spillage in the sea, on beaches or in rivers contact us, the coast guard, your M.P. and the Council where the pollution is! If you see plastic bags on beaches, or in the sea, or rivers, do your good deed and please try to safely remove them.
